ZIM COLLAR BRAND TO SHOWCASE AT SUNSHINE CITY.

Taurai Mushove a Zimbabwean upcoming designer who resides in Dubai. Has brought new changes in the fashion industry of his country through his brand Zim Collar.
In an interview with Tapiwa Rubaya (TR), the Zim Collar brand owner Taurai Mushove explains the uniqueness of his brand. He also shares why his showcasing his brand in Zimbabwe for the first time.

TR:Taurai can you introduce yourself to our readers?
TM:My name is Taurai Mushove. I’m a 31 year old Zimbabwean currently based in Dubai, UAE. Banker recently turned Fashion Designer.

TR:Judging from the previous chat we had you have zero background in the fashion industry but you have made a name for your self. What is the secret?
TM:Lol. Well thanks for the kind words, however, it’s still early days. There’s still a WHOLE LOT of ground to cover till I “make a name for myself!” I guess the secret is nothing more than my heart’s desire for us Zimbabweans to take pride in our cultural heritage. This resonates with people who have come across my work and understand why I am doing what I’m doing.

TR:Its now more than 2 months since your brand was launched how has the response been in Dubai and back Home in Zimbabwe?
TM:The response has been overwhelmingly positive both in Dubai and Zimbabwe and, in other parts of the world where there’s a number of Zimbabweans such as the UK, USA, South Africa and Australia. Lots of inquiries have predominantly come from these countries and have had sales from most of them.

TR:You are going to showcase your brand's collection during the harare fashion week and it will be your first time showcasing your brand in Zim.Why did you select that show to be your introduction?
TM:The theme for the HFW is what attracted me the most as it goes hand in hand with my collection.

TR: When one looks at the designs that are made via your line they can tell they are African how did you make sure those designs are highlighting African stories?
TM: The Dashiki design is arguably the most popular and universally recognized African clothing style. I adopted the same dashiki design so as to leverage on its popularity and importantly, begin to engage on the discussion of having our very own Zimbabwean attire that will someday be adopted across the African continent. The main features of this design are our national symbols such as the national flag colours, the Great Zimbabwe walls, the balancing rocks, our national flower the flame lily, the baobab tree which is also our national tree and a touch of the Zimbabwean bird.

TR:During the show besides showcasing what are you hoping to achieve?
TM:Since I am still new to the industry, I want to take this opportunity to learn a lot about fashion shows and network with the stylists and the stakeholders of the fashion industry. I sincerely hope that the outcome of this event will inspire us to come up with more unique Zimbabwean attires that will ultimately get adopted by every citizen of our country for the greater good of dressing our cultural nakedness.

TR:Speaking about the show you will be working hand in hand with models from Zimbabwe. What are you expecting from them as they will be catwalking while wearing your brand?
TM:This event comes at a very unique period in our country just a month or so before the elections that I believe will usher a new age of patriotism among Zimbabweans. I would like the models to know that they will be making history as they wear my brand.

TR:Besides Harare Fashion week any fashion  shows you are going to grace in Zimbabwe?
TM:I  will be looking forward to taking part in the Zimbabwe Fashion Week in August and hopefully, be part of the stylists chosen to dress the models for the Miss Zimbabwe pageant!

TR:Calvin can you introduce yourself to our readers
CM:I'm Calvin Madula,23 year old Byo based Model  and Actor .Born in Plumtree and I'm of th Tonga tribe originally from Binga..

TR:Instead of pursuing into another career you selected modelling why?
CM:Well Iv been an arts/showbizz  fan from a very tender age particularly Acting, modelling was a later discovery that I got through people who mistook me for a model when I wasn't yet,at one point I had someone approaching me and offer to manage me,so those are scenarios that rang a bell and having been inspired by the current Mr Zim(Shadel Noble)I took it up,and This came up well .

TR:Take us to your modelling career?
CM:After graduated with a local  modelling agency sometime last year,I've been privileged to work with the Baas on their launch, did a couple of shows locally the likes of the Fashion designers Expo,I was a finalist at the 1st edition of model Of The Year, summer fashion and style among others.

TR:As a local male model, who resides in the city of  Kings and Queens what challenges are you facing?
CM:Modelling is somehow belittled and not rilly taken as a profession,it's regarded more of a hobby where organisers or designers can get away with working with models on shows and shoots without appreciating them afterwards..Ts high tym people in Byo should understand that this is a profession where individuals can live off.

TR:Calvin you will be participating at Zambia's Inaugural Mens Fashion Week what does it mean to you?
CM: being my 1st international show That's a great achievement on my side honestly it means everything..that's wat I can say

TR:Across the world who is your inspiration in the modelling sector?
CM:I would say Simba Gozo

TR:You are also a student.Studying marketing what do you love about marketing ?
CM:I certainly enjoy how diverse it is,,i love thinking of ways to do things ‘differently’ using innovation and creativity which is a combination anybody which intends to be successful in the show biz should have

 TR:What are your future plans
CM:Taking my acting and modelling career to the next level.

TR:Words of wisdom to aspiring models?
CM:If your mind can conceive it therefore you can absolutely achieve it,no matter how tough the beginning can be,never give up,,stay true to your goals and stick to the plans cause dreams do come true not to those  wait but to those  make them reality..

COLIN RATISAI'S GIANT BLUE DRESS.

Yes HIFA (Harare International Festival Arts)came and went however the Giant blue dress which was won by Zimbabwe's Mbira Princesses is still the talk in everyone's mouth.
The Gigantic Blue dress was won by Hope Masike during the opening of HIFA.
Tapiwa Rubaya (TR) caught up with the man behind the concert of the dress Colin Ratisai (CR) who reveled how the Might Victoria Falls inspired him to come up with the concept of the dress.

TR:Colin can you tell us about yourself?
CR: My name is Colin Ratisai. I'm 34 years old.i was born in Harare and I am the third child in a family of 3.
TR:What led you to be part of the fashion industry?
CR:I've always loved putting together different textiles and to know how good they can work on people's clothes.
From a young age I've liked 'over the top' decorated garments. My sister was the first to get into fashion and
during my school days I always would prefer to work with her n her fashion studio than doing my
homework. My love for fashion has been with me from as long as I can remember draping fabric on dolls.

TR:Zimbabwe has faced economy downfall as a young business designer how has that affected you in the fashion industry?
CR:Growth in the industry has been stagnant. I certainly have no control of the graph as it escalates and descends,
never constant. It is really difficult in this economy to open up a specialised boutique offering high end fashion
and designing for specific occasion or event. The theatre and entertainment industry, which are natural
strongholds for fashion have also suffered making it difficult for artist to have a budget for wardrobe or
costume. I find myself struggling to find new business but at the same time having built a name over the years
there are people who seek me out & order clothes from time to time.

TR:Kindly state some fashion shows that you have showcased your brand ?
CR:I honestly have not show cased my collection in recent years but I used to represent & participate in the many
different fashion weeksin Zimbabwe and regionally including Zambia, South Africa&West Africa.

TR:Recently during HIFA you dressed 'Hope Masike' during the Hifa and the dress took everyone's attention?
CR:I did the Styling and Costume for HIFA opening' We Count' concert .Actually I have had the pleasure of
dressing the Princess of Mbira, Hope Masike for the last 3 years of Hifa & in different shows.

TR:Your brand hasn't been producing collections lately why?
CR: There is a price to represent your work on the different platforms, subsequently for the collection to sustain
itself there is need for buyers, magazines ,Bloggers etc to get the collection out there to the world so that as a
designer I can get a return on the investment made.

TR:Who came up with the concept of the giant dress which was woren by Hope Masike?
CR: CR.For the opening concert HIFA 2018 I worked with director James Blazsko who came up with the concept of
the show.He worked with different teams, stage, technical, choreography etc including me who did the
costuming.
The idea was to depict one of the things that we are most proud of as Zimbabweans, hence the Majestic Victoria
Falls. The Giant Dress had to represent the effect of the falls .

TR:Take us to the story behind the giant dress?
CR:The Blue dress, with its contrasting color tussels, was meant to signify the water fall. All this was supposed to
be viewed in the most artistic of ways rather than having a literal Victoria falls advert on television. So all the
different elements on stage where to be apart of the production. The lighting, the smoke that thunders, ballet
dancers and Derrick Mpofuslive song 'Chisikana changu Zimbabwe'.

TRWhat did it mean to you dressing the Mbira Princesses?
CR:I'd like to share that Hope Masike is amazing Human Being her hard work is brilliant.
She is wonderful in that she acknowledges and appreciate the works of other artists and she is going further.

ZIMBABWE COMMERCIAL MODEL DREAMS BIG.

Commercial modelling is one of the most common modelling sectors in Africa. However not everyone gets an opportunity
Zimbabwean female model Vimbai Mukambi (VM) speaks out about her journey in the modelling industry and how she wants to turn her pageant Toddles and Sashes (pageant meant to groom up coming models) intoan international pageant during an interview conducted by Tapiwa Rubaya (TR)

TR: Good day to you thank you for allowing me to interview you below are the interview questions hope you enjoy!!!
TR:Who is Vimbai Mukambi?
VM: Vimbai Mukambi branded to Vimbai Mk is  a mum of two beautiful girls :Akatendekaishe and Varikoishe and i am happily married. I'm a butler by profession, born n grew up in Norton did my primary at Vimbai primary school and high school at Seke 5 high and Pinewood high school, my tertiary at Trust academy  and The international Butlers academy in South africa Capetown.

TR:Take us to through your modelling background?
VM: My modelling journey started in 2009, when i was doing fashion modelling and appearing on catalogues  for local designers such as LadyCeeKay fashion couture by Cecilia Kwashira ,and Christian Edwards designs. I then moved to runway, i was doing showcasing  Topics Stores on  Cheese and Wine nights,in 2013 ,that's when i decided to specialise and i chose commercial modeling with the help of my cousin brother Emmanuel Tenga .

TR:As a married woman what challenges are you facing in the industry?
VM: -i have been blessed with a very supportive family, my husband and his parents are my supper fans,he's never discouraged me because since we were dating he knew I'm passionate about modelling,on the other hand they enjoy watching news on me and seeing me branded on billboards, buses, shops etc,he's always bragging that i have taken their family name to greater heights.

TR:Why did you select commercial modelling and what is the advantage of commercial modelling compared to other types of modelling?
VM: I choose commercial modeling because  i felt that my strength lies in that area since my height would not allow  me to do pageant. Also that i was married and working i wanted something that would allow a balance in my day to day.

TR:With economy  crisis being the main challenge faced in Africa how has the crisis affected your country's modelling industry?
VM: Well one of the major challenges caused by the  economy is that of delayed payments, you do an advert and they take a long time to pay, also agencies end up repeating an advert using the same pictures rather than doing another  shoot to cut costs, which is a disadvantage on the models.

TR:Share with us some of your achievements that you have obtained since you ventured into the industry?
VM: I was a catalogue model until 2013,i have been a campaign queen and the only female model who features on Zimbabwe Castle lager adverts since 2014 till present. My greatest achievement was in 2015 when i became the face of dstv "Hakuna tv yakadaro "campaign which i was on billboards as well, then 2016 I was the Dairy bord Zimbabwe calendar (the peak of my career).
I then got a contract to be the face of Cinderella hair company the same year ,meanwhile doing my castle larger campaign shoots also featured in the Remington Gold cigarette adverts.
In  2017 I  became the face if Ok Grandchallenge,i  also ran as face of Cabs bank Custodial service campaign,i had an amazing opportunity of being part of the judging panel of Lil Miss South Africa early 2017 in JHB.
This year I am the face of castle lager world cup campaign, face of Ok Grand challenge running it for the second time in a row,i also did visual  commercial for dstv. Also I have  featured in musical videos the greatest being killer t's hit ndamuda, i featured on a medley by Vic Tacks which i appeared on Celcius and Garry Tight part.Once featured on Tocky vibez video, Hande Toki videošŸ¤£.
The greatest of all I also founded the first child pageant in Zimbabwe called Zim Toddlers and Sashes,2015 ,2016 as a way of giving back using my experiences to groom and nature young models as they are the future, is still running .

TR:What are hoping to achieve in 5 years ?
VM: I want to develop my pageant into a national pageant allowing me to remain significant as I'm not growing younger and to set a charity foundation as u know modelling is about being in the game ,achieving and giving back ,hopping to go international especially as a video vixen.

TR:What makes Ghana modelling industry unique?
KB: What makes Modeling unique in Ghana is that; Ghanaian Models are very dedicated and always willing to do their best at all times, and so far Ghana is very known as one of the peaceful country and also has creative and much styled fashion designers known in Africa. So both designers and Models do their best to make sure Ghana is been put on the Map because Ghanaians show organizers are able to put up a show and host about 30 designers over the world to showcase on the show and so to me  think this is  what makes modeling in Ghana Unique.

TR:Within a space of time when you entered into modelling you participated in one of Africa's biggest event Mercedes Benz Africa share with us your experiences?
KB: Mercedes Benz African fashion festival Ghana is rated as one of the top shows in Africa, I will say the show was a step up for me, because it hosted various models and designers across the globe and me being new in the industry and was able to walk on that show proves or tells me am much prepared for any show.
Their Model Casting pulled a crowed of models over two hundred (200)  and me being part of the models being selected is a plus to me also.
Though there was a lot of tension, but I was able to go through perfectly.

TR:Africa is yet to host another Mercedes Benz Africa fashion Accra show are you participating?
